Loveland High School sophomore Kobi Johnson won the 106-pound title at the Class 4A State Wrestling Championships at the Pepsi Center in Denver. Mountain View High School senior Malachi Contreras placed second in the 126-pound championship, Thompson Valley High School senior Chase Englehardt placed second in the 160-pound championship, and LHS senior Marcelo Espinoza Diaz placed second in the 170-pound championship.

Elementary Students Compete in Grand Battle of the Books

Elementary school students from Thompson School District completed six weeks of Battle of the Books trivia competitions. The top teams from each grade then competed for bragging rights and a trophy for their school at the Grand Battle of the Books at the Loveland Public Library. The winners are: 3rd grade – Cottonwood Plains Elementary School; 4th grade – Centennial Elementary School; and 5th grade – New Vision Charter School.

Middle School Teacher Awarded WOW Travel Grant

Laura LaBelle, ELD teacher at Bill Reed Middle School and Turner Middle School, was awarded Thompson Education Foundation’s 2020 Windows on the World (WOW) Travel Grant sponsored by the Hiatt Family Fund at the Community Foundation of Northern Colorado. LaBelle will use her award to travel to Cuernavaca, Mexico, to study and practice specialized Spanish language educator vocabulary and to learn more about Mexico’s culture to honor and celebrate the rich cultural heritage that her students bring to the classroom.

Bill Reed Middle School LISA students submitted 31 entries to the BRMS PTA Reflections art contest. The following entries received awards: 1st – “Leon” by Valentina Hernandez; 2nd – “You Can’t Hide” by Chloe Schaal; 3rd – “Opening up Space” by Emmy Heinz; 4th – “Marshall Bruce” by Ella Toombs; 5th – “Look inside the box” by Phoebe Roberts; and Honorable Artist – Jonathon Yachik. Their artwork is headed to the state PTA contest in Denver.

Staff Member Receives National Award for World Language Advocacy

As part of the 2020 JNCL-NCLIS (Joint National Committee for Languages and National Council for Languages and International Studies) Language Advocacy Day in Washington, D.C., the national J. David Edwards Power of Advocacy Award was presented to Thompson School District staff member Toni Theisen for her tireless dedication to the field of World Language. Her work has made a difference in classrooms on a national scale. Describing the award, the presenters said, “Toni exudes grassroots advocacy. Through mentoring new teachers, leading workshops and officially recognizing the next generation of leaders, Toni demonstrates a seemingly tireless energy to positively impact language education at the local, state and federal levels. She is also active online, sharing and shaping the discussion around language education.”

Girls Place at State Wrestling Championships
Freshman Morgan Johnson completed an undefeated season by winning the 100-pound title at the Colorado Girls High School State Wrestling Championships at Thornton High School. Teammate Ashley Terpstra took second at 118 pounds, Audrey Banks took third at 111 pounds and Kelly Clingan took fourth at 105 pounds. The Loveland girls wrestling team took third overall with 91.5 points.

TVHS Girls Swim Team Places at Northern League Championships
The Thompson Valley High School girls swim team finished third at the Northern League Championships at Mountain View High School. Several district swimmers will move on to the 4A State Championships. Mountain View High School senior Sophie Busse was named Swimmer of the Year by Northern League coaches—her ability to inspire the team was one of the leading reasons.

Girls Wrestling Team Wins Regional Tournament
The Loveland girls wrestling team won the Region 1 girls wrestling tournament at Fort Lupton High School with 170.5 points. Six of eight athletes qualified for the Colorado Girls High School Wrestling State Championships. The state qualifiers are Ashley Terpstra, Audrey Bankes, Kim Carlin, Morgan Johnson, Kelly Clingan and Jay Rodriguez.

Middle School Math Counts Tournament Winners

The individual winners of the Middle School Math Counts Tournament were: 1st Place – Thomas Goldsberry, Walt Clark MS; 2nd Place – Jacob Findley, Lucile Erwin MS; and 3rd Place – Jaden Fitzpatrick, Walt Clark MS. The team winner was Lucile Erwin Team A with members Jacob Findley, Drew Giron, Brooklyn Barrows, Ethan Straw and coach Kathryn Gunn.
